Why insurance matters in Tanzania
Many of the places we travel to are wonderfully remote, which means medical evacuation and treatment can be costly. Insurance also protects the money you have paid if illness, a family emergency or travel disruption forces you to cancel or cut your trip short.
When to buy it
Buy your policy as soon as you pay your deposit. That way, cancellation cover protects you from the moment your money is committed, not just once you start travelling.
What good cover includes
- Emergency medical treatment and hospital costs
- Emergency evacuation, including air evacuation, and repatriation
- Cancellation, curtailment and missed-departure cover
- Lost, stolen or delayed baggage and personal belongings
- Personal liability
- All the activities in your itinerary
Kilimanjaro and mountain treks
For Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and other high-altitude treks, make sure your policy covers trekking to the highest point of your route, which is 5,895 metres for Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak, and includes helicopter rescue and evacuation. Many standard policies stop at a lower altitude, so check the limit carefully. We may ask for your policy details before your climb begins.
Safari and activity cover
Check that your policy covers game drives and any activities you plan to do, such as walking safaris, hot-air balloon flights, canoeing, cycling, snorkelling or diving in Zanzibar. Tell your insurer about every destination and activity in your itinerary.
Visiting Zanzibar
At the time of writing, international visitors to Zanzibar must also buy the Zanzibar government's inbound travel insurance, which is separate from your own policy. Requirements can change, so check the official Zanzibar guidance before you travel, and ask us if you would like help with how to arrange it.
Pre-existing conditions
Declare any medical conditions, pregnancy or recent treatment to your insurer. Undeclared conditions can make a policy invalid just when you need it.
Details to share with us
Please send us your insurer's name, your policy number and the insurer's 24-hour emergency assistance number before you travel. We keep these securely so we can act quickly if you ever need help during your journey.
If you need to claim
In an emergency, get help first, then contact your insurer's assistance line as soon as possible. Keep receipts, medical reports and written evidence of any disruption. We will provide the booking documents, invoices and cancellation letters your insurer asks for. Our Cancellation and Refund policies still apply whether or not you have insurance, or if an insurer declines a claim.
