Responsible Travel Policy

Tanzania's wildlife, landscapes and communities are at the heart of every journey we plan. This is how we help protect them, and how you can too.

Travel that gives back

The essentials, at a glance.

Dastel Tour and Safaris is a Tanzanian company, and the places we share with travellers are our home. We believe a great journey should leave wildlife undisturbed, landscapes intact and local communities better off. This policy describes our commitments and how you can help.

  • Wildlife first

Patient, respectful viewing that puts the animals' wellbeing first.

  • Local benefit

Tanzanian guides, crews and partners at the heart of every trip.

  • A light footprint

Less plastic, less waste, and leaving every place as we found it.

  • Respectful encounters

Cultural visits arranged with communities, never staged for them.

In the national parks and reserves

  • Our guides follow park rules: staying on permitted tracks, respecting speed limits and keeping a respectful distance from wildlife.
  • We never chase, crowd or call to animals, and we never feed wildlife.
  • Your guide may move on from a sighting if animals show signs of stress or too many vehicles gather.
  • Please keep noise low, stay in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise, and take all litter with you.

On Kilimanjaro and the mountain trails

Mountain crews make every climb possible. We are committed to treating porters, cooks and guides fairly, with reasonable loads, suitable clothing and equipment, proper meals and shelter, and fair pay. On the trail we follow leave-no-trace principles: carrying out all waste and keeping camps clean and quiet.

Supporting local communities

We work with Tanzanian guides, drivers, mountain crews and locally owned businesses wherever we can, so that more of what you spend stays in the country. When you buy crafts, buy directly from the people who made them, and enjoy local food, markets and coffee along the way.

Culture and photography

  • Cultural visits, including Maasai villages, are arranged with the community and paid for fairly.
  • Always ask before photographing people, and respect the answer.
  • Dress modestly in villages and in Stone Town, covering shoulders and knees.
  • During Ramadan, be discreet about eating, drinking and smoking in public in Zanzibar.

Plastic and waste

Tanzania has banned plastic carrier bags, so please leave them at home, including in your luggage. Bring a reusable water bottle. Many lodges and our vehicles can provide refills, which reduces the number of plastic bottles used on your journey.

Drones and wildlife products

Drones need permits from the relevant authorities and are not allowed in national parks without permission. Never buy products made from ivory, wild animal skins, shells, coral or other protected species. They harm wildlife and are illegal to export.

Tipping fairly

Tipping is customary in Tanzania and an important part of the income of guides, cooks, porters and lodge staff. Before you travel we share clear guidance, so that you can tip with confidence and the whole crew is recognised.

Help us do better

We are always learning. If you have ideas for how we can travel more responsibly, or if anything during your journey did not meet these standards, please tell us at booking@dastelsafaris.com.
